Roger Smith

Ann The Rebel

The real name of Ann-Margret is Anna Olsson, she was born in Sweden 25 years ago, she emigrated to the United States when she was 5. She has always wanted to be an actress and an entertainer, like Sammy Davis, but more beautiful and feminine. She has been in 16 films, with us she is mostly known as the adolescent who seduces 'The Tiger', Vittorio Gassman.

Last year her name kept popping up in our heads as one of those actors who wants more. She bought a pink Cadillac, she recently bought a luxury home for her parents, an ex-cleaning lady and an ex-electrician. She likes to travel, to shop for clothes, she has flirted with Eddie Fisher and Elvis, but in May, after she had known him for 2 years, she married an unknown actor, Roger Smith.

They are very very strong-minded though, whether it's buying a Rolls Royce or not buying a new house, he still wants to have his freedom, without real committment, that's why hotels are his preferred homes.

Ann-Margret's happiest moment so far, was when she performed the song 'Baby Won't You Please Come Home' at the birthday party for President Kennedy. After the party the president sat with her and spoke for 20 minutes. She doesn't remember what they talked about, but for sure he talked only about her, Ann, and he flattered her a lot.

A few minutes of happiness and many of unhappiness. Despite her success, she hasn't learned all the rules of Hollywood. She has said in an interview:

'When they launch an actress in America, they don't do it with subtelty. They do it withall the clichés: The Beautiful, The Exotic, The Hard One. Me they called The Animal. It's my unofficial brand, and they came up with all the usual rumours, that I took drugs, that I ran wild on my motorcycle, that I got drunk. Every day a new lie, and I had to put up with it, because that's the way it is in Hollywood. It's my parents who suffered the most, and they were sick and tired of everything that was said in the papers, they thought that they also ought to write something good.

Today, when I am well known, those days are over. I can finally say that there are no drugs in my life, my preferred transportation is the car, and I don't get drunk. Of course, being a celebrity, there's new problems, we actresses are always surrounded by people who want something from us, money, or to hurt us. Whenever someone wants to be your friend, you have to ask yourself if he's a true friend or just wants something from you. There are problems like that all the time. With me, as it is with Audrey hepburn or Kim Novak.'
